About ADSL2

What is ADSL2+?

ADSL2+ is a faster DSL service technology. The ADSL2+ is much faster than normal ADSL1 service. The ADSL1 broadband download speeds are between 256kbps and the maximum theoretical speed of 8Mbps. ADSL2+ download speed between 1.5Mbps and the maximum theoretical speed of 24Mbps. ADSL2+ will allow you to enjoy large file downloads, VoIP phone service, online gaming as well as Streaming TV and radios.

To obtain maximum ADSL2+ speeds customers must use an ADSL2+ supported MODEM and have filters installed. The actual speeds will depend on, distance from the local telephone exchange, internet traffic and the quality of the customer’s telephone copper line.

What are the prerequisites to obtain an ADSL2 Service via Optus?

To obtain ADSL2 service with Optus;

  • Your local telephone exchange needs to be equipped with Optus ADSL2 equipments.
  • There needs to be free ports available.
  • There has to be Telstra copper running to your residence.

To use ADSL2 service, you need to have an active phone line. If you don't have an active telephone line, Exetel can now activate both telephone and an ADSL based on the availability of the infrastructure at the local exchange.

How do I place an order for ADSL2 via Optus?

Can you upgrade the equipment to provide ADSL2 service for the users who are located far away from the exchange?

Exetel has limited ownership to work out this as our suppliers are fully responsible of this part of the equipment and also it is not very flexible to implement this change due to the high cost.


Do I require an account number from my telephone bill to apply for ADSL2 via Optus?

Yes, you need your account number to apply for ADSL2 via Optus.


I am on ADSL 1 with another provider but my phone is through Telstra. Can I apply for ADSL 2 Bundled/ Optus?

As long as the ADSL service is connected to the Telstra infrastructure this can be done. If the ADSL is connected through SSS (To another company’s exchange equipment) then this is not a service that can be transferred. The ADSL will need to be canceled first before processing the application.

How do I know when my ADSL service is ready?

You will be informed via email when your ADSL service is ready. Please make sure we have your latest email address on record. Alternately you can contact the provisioning department to confirm the activation.


What do I do if my ADSL2 application has passed the estimated activation date?

If the estimated activation date of your ADSL connection has passed, please contact the provisioning department and advise of the delay.

What is Rapid Transfer/Churn of Optus ADSL2 services?

This is the process of transferring a service when you are moving from one ADSL2 provider to another ADSL2 provider while using the same supplier. With the ADSL2 - Optus services the current provider should be providing the service via Optus DSLAM's / equipment.


Who are the other providers using the same infrastructure (Optus ADSL2 copper network)?

Please call your ADSL provider to confirm whether you are connected to the Optus ADSL2 copper network (via an OPTUS DSLAM). Other providers who are using Optus infrastructure include:

How long does it take to transfer my ADSL service to an Optus plan with Exetel?

Transfer time for an Optus plan with Exetel will depend on your current provider, If your current provider uses Optus infrastructure, it would take 3-4 business days and if your current provider does not use Optus infrastructure, it would take 8-10 business days. However it is always best to contact provisioning@exetel.com.au once your order has gone through to confirm eligibility should your service not be on Telstra equipment.


Is there any downtime when transferring the telephone line from my current provider to Exetel (Optus bundle plans)?

There may be a possible downtime of 15 minutes to 48 hours when transferring the telephone line from your current provider to Exetel (Optus bundle plans).


I am on ADSL1/ADSL2 with another provider and my phone is through Telstra. What happens to my ADSL when I transfer my phone service to an Exetel Optus plan?

ADSL2 service via Optus is a bundled connection. There's no option to transfer only the telephone line to an Optus Bundle plan.


What information should I provide to transfer my telephone line to Exetel when signing up for an Optus Bundle plan?

When signing up for an Optus Bundle plan with Exetel, you should provide your billable account number and Telephone Service Provider information.


My telephone line is provided by another company on non-telstra equipment. Can I still transfer to an Optus plan with Exetel?

Transferring your service to an Optus plan when your telephone line is not provided by Telstra will dependend upon certain factors. It is always best to contact provisioning@exetel.com.au once your order has gone through to confirm eligibility should your service not be on Telstra equipment


If I want to port away from Exetel telephone how long will this take? Does Exetel 'hold' the telephone line or is the gaining carrier responsible?

Time frames would be dependent on type of Port. If it is over the Telstra network (i.e to another Telstra provider) then this is approximately around 3-5 business days. If this is over Non-Telstra equipment then the gaining carrier will may take up to 10 working days to complete this transfer.


Plan Changes (Optus to Optus)

How can I change my ADSL plan with Optus?

You may change your current ADSL plan over to one of the newly available plans through your member’s facility.

Go to Manage services >> ADSL/Fiber >> Change service section.


How long does it take to change the ADSL plans?

ADSL plan change will come in to effect with your next billing cycle.


How much is the ADSL plan change fee?

Plan change fee will be displayed in the member’s facility. This fee will change from time to time.


Is there a downtime for my current internet connection when I change my ADSL plan?

There is no downtime for your current internet connection when you are doing a same carrier plan change as it is an automated process.


Will I be on a new contract when I change my ADSL plan?

Yes. There will be a new contract, whenever you change the plan


If there is a change in ADSL speed, when would it take place?

Speed will change within 2-3 working days after the plan change effective date.
