Description

High speed packet access is an Internet service that runs through the mobile 3G network. In order to have the HSPA service workable you will first need to be in an area that covers 3G access via the Optus network. eXeTeL provides a wireless broadband service via the Optus wholesale 3G/HSPA mobile network. eXeTeL provides a USIM and/or USB STICK to you.

The connection runs through mobile towers that provides Internet access either through a PC or through a mobile (Only works if the MODEM is enabled for HSPA and 3G). HSPA is more frequently described as wireless broadband these days.

HSPA or High Speed Packet Access is essentially a collection of mobile telephony protocols that allow for improved utilization of the radio bandwidth. You are able to download and browse on the Internet at high speed.

eXeTeL provides two types of HSPA services:

  • Data Only
  • Can only be used for data (Internet use) through an HSPA dongle (Dongle plugs into the PC for use of the Internet)
  • Data + Mobile
  • Can only be used for data (Internet use) access either through a mobile (browse Internet on a mobile) or through a HSPA dongle (Dongle plugs into the PC for use of the Internet). If the SIM is plugged into a mobile phone, calls can be made and received.

    Applying for HSPA Services

    HSPA Service Qualification Checks

eXeTeL uses maps provided by Optus to qualify customers and can only advise whether they think the service is available. Use the detailed qualification tool in the Service Availability and Coverage Maps on the HSPA section via our website to check the eligibility.

eXeTeL in some cases may recommend a YAGI antenna in order to improve service, however do not guarantee that the service will be improved.

There can be situations where Optus informing you that the service is available but still eXeTeL does not confirm availability. Please consider that w make our own judgment even if we are using the same qualification tool, when informing the customer whether or not there is adequate coverage.

Contact (02) 8030 1000 (Sydney users) or 1300 788 141 (National) (These are VoIP numbers so eXeTeL VoIP users can call at no charge) OR email the residential support department via residentialsupport@exetel.com.au to check the service availability. One of our representatives will perform a detailed search based on your address.

    HSPA Speeds

    What speeds can be expected?

HSPA speeds will be changing time to time depending on the environment as well as the area. Although it is a mobile service that could be carried to any location, this can make the connection to be slower, dropping out or not even connect.

When checking the colour of the MODEM you can determine or know what you can expect on what speeds you would achieve:

    Green – GPRS – 50kbps
    Blue – WCDMA – 50kbps – 384kbps
    Cyan – HSPA – 384 – 3.6Mbps

Generally the best speeds are often achieved in Sydney metropolitan areas and also closer towards the window.

    How fast is Wireless Broadband?

While the theoretical speed possible is 7.2 mbps down, speeds are dependent on many factors but it is likely that most users will get practical download speeds of 2 mbps - 2.5 mbps in a location with 'perfect' conditions. Many eXeTeL/Optus HSPA users are experiencing speeds greater than these, 4.5 mbps in North Sydney for instance. These speeds will become more common and more widespread as Optus progressively upgrades the network to 7.2 mbps down and over 1 mbps up across Australia.

Will my service still work if I am in a GPRS (2G) coverage area?

Your HSPA service will still work, however the speed of the service will be greatly affected to the point of dial-up like speeds.

I am within coverage according to the maps yet I am unable to obtain speeds that what Wireless Broadband can offer, what is the reason?

The old E169 and the current E160 USB sticks that eXeTeL provide support both the 2100MHZ and 900MHZ frequencies for HSPA. Regional areas with a different shade of orange depict the 900MHZ range only that can be captured for HSPA use provided you have the supported hardware.

    MODEM and SIM for HSPA

    Is the MODEM locked/ unlocked?

The MODEMs that eXeTeL sells are not locked.

Can I use a locked Optus MODEM?

Yes an Optus HSPA MODEM can be used with an eXeTeL SIM, however it would be best to consult your previous provider first.

Do these MODEMs support 64 bit OS's?

Visit http://www.exetel.com.au/hspa-hardware-compare.php to check the hardware comparison table.

How do I order a HSPA MODEM if I have not ordered one with the application?

You can write to hspasales@exetel.com.au and confirm payment via the same payment details you have provided in the application form.

My SIM card is locked, how can I obtain the PUK code to unlock my HSPA SIM?

You will need to contact our Provisioning department by emailing provisioning@exetel.com.au or over the telephone and then we will be able to provide the PUK code.

Can I use a different SIM card (unused or obtained from another provider) to activate my HSPA service?

This cannot be done, another provider's SIM cannot be used.

I lost my HSPA SIM, how can I obtain a replacement SIM card?

Contact eXeTeL provisioning either by emailing provisioning@exetel.com.au or calling 0280301000 / 1300 788 141 and by selecting option 3 to obtain advise.

Can I use my existing SIM?

No, you cannot use the existing SIM.

How do I set up my HSPA SIM for the Iphone?

You need to contact the Apple for instructions.

    HSPA Handsets

I want to use Wireless Broadband on my handset? Will my handset work on it?

For HSPA compliant handsets, we have provided a current list of HSPA handsets here; http://www.exetel.com.au/residential-hspa-compatibility.php

My Handset is not on the list, can it still work?

We advise to use compliant handsets; however, if you do wish to use your current handset you will have to make sure it is a 3G, 2100MHZ UTMS supported handset. Non-HSPA phones speeds are also slower (approximately 200-384Kpbs). Use with caution.

How do I make/receive calls if I use my HSPA USIM in my handset?

Upon activation you will be given a mobile number to receive incoming calls and SMS. Outgoing calls can be made via VoIP services which you can order with eXeTeL upon activation.

    Mobile Porting

Can I port my HSPA number to an eXeTeL mobile service?

Yes, you can port HSPA numbers to eXeTeL mobile services, in order to do that you will need to place a mobile port application with us using your HSPA mobile number.

I Applied for a mobile number porting to HSPA how long will it take for the porting?

Porting from an Optus service to eXeTeL can take up to twenty four hours. Porting from another carrier (Telstra, Vodafone…etc) could take up to forty five minutes.

I Wish to port my HSPA number over to a different provider, how can I obtain my A/C number?

Contact eXeTeL provisioning department either by email or phone.

Is this possible only with Data + Mobile plans?

With the HSPA services you can port your current mobile number to eXeTeL's "Data + Mobile" plans only.
