NetComm NB5580/NB5580W Setup Guide

Please open your ‘ADSL Modem’ user guide. This is an orange coloured guide that came with the NB5580/NB5580W modem.

Please then turn to page 19-20.

1) Open your web browser (Internet Explorer, Netscape for example)

2) In the address bar, type in http://192.168.1.1 or 192.168.1.1

3) Await for the NB5580/NB5580W logon prompt to appear

4) Leave the username blank

5) Input password as the password

6) Press OK

You have now logged into the NB5580/NB5580W!

7) In the Host Name field, leave this blank

8) In the Domain Name field, leave this blank

9) The ADSL Connection Type should be changed to Gateway using PPPoE

10) In the Username field, you should enter your Exetel supplied Network/ISP USERNAME and PASSWORD

11) Click on APPLY

Changing Admin password

Don't forget to change your admin password from 'password' to something else.

You can do this under Management > Device Admin and completing the two password boxes at the top of the page.

This is very important as some new javascript trojan's can now look for your local router, attempt to hack using generic passwords and, if successful, open your router's ports to allow intruders easy access.

PS: Don't forget this new password, you'll need to logon as username = 'admin'; password = <your new password>, if you want to check/modify your router's settings.

If you do forget the password follow the user manual to reset the router : password = 'password'

Wireless Security

You may choose to have the wireless feature on or off. If you aren't sure, turn it off to prevent externals (neighbours, street sniffers) from accessing your network and bandwidth.

If you need wireless access for your laptop/s or other machines then security is important, to maintain network privacy and to prevent external use of your bandwidth. The following is a list of things to do to enhance the privacy/security wireless settings:

1. Check you have the latest firmware: select Management > Status Monitor

• As of 17-Apr-07 the latest firmware version is: 1.05.3, Dec 13 2005

• NOTE: The new firmware allows for WPA instead of the original WEP security, which is hackable in minutes

2. Select Main Menu > OnePage Setup

a. Under Wireless select Enable

b. Assign a unique SSID name, eg. 'Bob's WPA'

c. Set SSID Broadcast to Disallow

d. Set Wireless Security to Mandatory

e. Click Wireless Security Setting

f. Select Wireless Security dropdown: WPA Pre-Shared Key

g. WPA Algorithms dropdown should be: TKIP

h. Choose a WPA Shared Key: select any alphanumeric shared key (password) of 8 or more characters see https://www.grc.com/passwords.htm for secure password creation

i. Click Apply and Continue

3. Startup your wireless laptop

a. Determine the wireless adapters physical address (MAC)

• For Windows environment this can be found via command-line ipconfig /all
• The physical address will be 12 hexadecimal digits, eg. 00-34-3F-7D-1B-A4

b. Set up your laptop's wireless connection to find your SSID using WPA and your Pre-Shared Key

4. Back at NB5580W configuration: select Advanced Function > Wireless

a. Select Wireless Station MAC Filter: Enable

b. Click Edit MAC Filter Setting

c. Enter the physical address for your laptop's wireless adaptor WITHOUT punctuation, eg. 00343F7D1BA4

d. Click Apply and Continue

e. Click Apply

Now your router is no longer broadcasting that it is open to wireless connections, and it will only allow connections from an authenicated wireless adaptor which matches the physical address of your adapter, AND has the Pre-Shared Key.

Off

To completely turn off wireless, and ensure nobody (not even you) can see or smell it, do the following:

1. Select Main Menu > OnePage Setup

a. Go to the Wireless heading and Disable

b. Set SSID Broadcast to Disallow

2. Select Advanced Function > Wireless

a. Wireless Station MAC Filter: Enable

b. Click Edit MAC Filter Setting

c. Select Temporarily Block for all Allowed MAC address

Now your router will not broadcast it's existence, and will not accept any wireless connections.
