Description

What is Exetel Web SMS?

Exetel provides the ability for any Exetel DSL user to send SMS messages using their DSL service instead of a mobile telephone.

The SMS service is sourced from aggregators using the major Australian mobile carrier networks and can be used to send SMS to any nine digits mobile number in the world (depending on international mobile network availability).


Who can apply for Web SMS?

Exetel offers both business and residential SMS accounts.

They are virtually the same, except the business account allows a user to send an SMS from an unverified phone number or alphanumeric setting. A business account also allows a user to add an ABN for tax benefits.

Business accounts must be set up by someone from corporate sales.

Residential accounts can be set up via the website for pre-paid or EIDA.

Am I able to have an SMS Only Account?

Yes you are.

Web SMS Plans and Pricing

What are the available Web SMS plans?

Exetel provides two types of plans:

  • Pre-paid
  • Post-paid


Web SMS facility allows you to send an SMS message from your computer for only 5c per message. There are three types of SMS services as below:


  • Residential Bundled - This service is automatically attached to an ADSL or Mobile Broadband product offered by Exetel. Once one of the broadband services is active, the Web SMS facility is ready to use.
  • Pre Paid - This service does not need to be attached to any broadband product, as it is pre paid. Exetel has an online system that accepts live payments. Since credit cards are used we are able to verify payment within an hour and the service would be usable within this time frame.
  • Post Paid – This facility needs to be approved by one of the sales staff .

How much is one SMS?

From April 1st, 2010 one message (160 characters) is only 7c to any mobile within Australia. For International mobile numbers the charges vary and are detailed here

How do I pay for each SMS?

If you have an existing ADSL, VoIP, Mobile or Hosting service, the charges are added to your monthly bill. If you have a prepaid account you must purchase sufficient credit prior to using the service.


Using SMS

How many characters are there in a single SMS message?

One message is 160 characters in length.


What happens when I go over 160 characters in a single SMS?

The message shall be sent through as a multi-part message so that it received as one continuous message.


What is a multi-part text message?

A multi-part message is multiple messages constructed to appear on the mobile phone handset as one message using non-visible headers within the following 160 set of characters to advise the handset to attach the message to the previous. The inclusion of the headers means that;

  • 1 part = 0 - 160 characters
  • 2 parts = 161 - 304 characters
  • 3 parts = 305 - 456 characters
  • 4 parts = 457 - 608 characters


What is the maximum amount of messages that I can send as a single SMS?

The maximum amount of messages that can be sent is 4 with a maximum of 612 characters.


How do recipients know I sent the SMS?

You can set the default sender to your mobile number and the recipient will be able to identify your mobile number as the source of the message each time.

eXeSMS application

What is the exeSMS Application?

eXeSMS is a Windows GUI application for the eXeTeL SMS API. It allows eXeTeL customers to send SMS messages without having to log into the Secure Members Facilities area.


Will the exeSMS Application be available on MAC?

Currently exeSMS for MAC has been planned but there is no concrete date for release. Though the application will be immediately released within the Members Facilities area when it is completed.


How do I use the address book?

The address book allows you to store numbers of friends/customers that are frequently used. You must first create a group name such as "Family." The second step is to individually add the name and phone numbers of each person you would like to add to the group.


How do I use the SMS templates?

SMS templates allow you to store frequently used standard messages. You simply create a template and give it a title. The templates will then be available. Every time you wish to send an SMS message on the right side of the message box.


What is API Access?

API Access allows you to use the exeSMS application. It also allows other developers to utilize the eXeTeL Web SMS Facility through their own interface. A more detailed explanation is contained within the "SMS API Document".


Can I have more than one API Access?

You can have multiple API Access account but this cannot have the same "username" and the "username" must not be already taken.


Does it cost extra to have API Access?

Registering for API Access does not incur any extra charges. You only pay for the SMS messages that you send.

SMS Gateway

eXeTeL's SMS Gateway allows customers to send and receive SMS through their application, system, website or our interface. eXeTeL's Application Programming Interface (API) allows business clients to integrate SMS into their business software or website. Residential customers do not require our API and can use the eXeTeL SMS web portal.


SMS Web Portal

By signing up to eXeTeL's SMS via ADSL service, customers are authorized to manage their account in the secure Members Facilities area as given below:

  • Send and receive SMS
  • Monitor billing and purchase further services
  • Scheduling messages and upload SMS templates
  • Uploading your contact databases into our comprehensive online address book
  • View delivery reports, monitor your usage and manage your account
  • Send Email to SMS
  • Send WAP-pushes


If you are an existing customer then you do not need to sign up for this service – it is available from their Members Facilities area.

If you are not an existing customer and wish to use only our SMS service, you can order a Pre-paid service from our website by visiting http://www.exetel.com.au/residential-sms-overview.php or create a Post-paid service by calling residential sales.

Virtual Mobile Numbers

The use of Virtual Mobile Numbers (VMNs) allows us to provide a return SMS function. These VMNs cost an additional fee of $20 a month.

They are to be ordered by the customer from their Members Facilities area.

Customer has to set the sender as their virtual mobile number. The recipient is then able to reply back to the message.


1. Go to Members Facilities area.

2. Click Manage Services – SMS option.

3. Select Order VMN option.

4. Enter the Forwarding Email Address and make necessary changes to Restriction to API account Access.

5. Submit registration by clicking the Confirm Order button.

What is an SMS Inbox for Mobile Virtual Number?

A Mobile Virtual Number (MVN) allows your customers/family/friends to SMS a virtual mobile number which will then forward the message to a selected email address. The message will also be available for viewing within your Secure Members Facilities area.

Email to SMS

What is Email to SMS?

Email to SMS allows you to create a [alias]@sms.exemail.com.au account and allow any email sent to that address to be forwarded on to a mobile number of your choosing, and are charged at a starting rate of 7c/message.


What is Registered Email to SMS?

Registered Email to SMS allows you to specify an email address that you have already created and send SMS messages using that account.


What is the difference between Registered Email to SMS and Email to SMS?

The difference between these two is that Email to SMS allows receipt of SMS message through email while registered Email to SMS allows sending of SMS message through email.


What is Bulk SMS?

Bulk SMS allows you to send the same SMS message to multiple recipients at once. You are charged 8c for each recipient and the same as message sizes for single messages. It can be used in tandem with your address book to SMS common groups of friends or customers that you may have.


What is a Scheduled SMS?

Scheduled SMS allows you to choose a later date and time within three days to send an SMS.


WAP SMS

What is a WAP SMS?

A WAP SMS allows you to send images, ring tones, video clips to a WAP enabled mobile phone. The content is not sent to the mobile phone instead the recipient is directed to a URL where they are able to get it from.


What if the recipient’s mobile phone is not WAP enabled?

Generally the SMS will be ignored by the recipient’s mobile phone, through the message will still be sent from our network to the destination.
