General Overview

VoIP on your mobile through WiFi enables a person to make VoIP calls whilst connected to their WiFi network at the cost of the VoIP charges only.

This section of the Wiki includes guides on how to perform this on different handsets. In this guide we have used the 3rd party application called Fring as the VoIP client. It is simple, easy to use and is compatible with a wide range of handsets. However if it is not compatible with your handset and you have a VoIP client already installed try the General Settings.

Requirements

Below are the requirements for this to work on WiFi capable mobile phones.

-WiFi capable phone

-Wifi capable router/modem

-VoIP client (Either one included in the phone or 3rd party)

-Exetel VoIP service

Setup Instructions

1. Connect to your WiFi Access Point (Differs according to mobile handset)

2. Download Fring to your Mobile by filling out the details

3. Fring will Install off the sms that is sent to you

4. Create a user ID for Fring (this can be anything and is Free)

5. Select SIP as the account to install

6. Enterred VoIP settings

Visible user:- *your voip number*@sip1.exetel.com.au

Password:- Your voip password.

Server:- sip1.exetel.com.au

Once this has been done, Fring will enable you to place VoIP calls through it's application.

General Settings

These General settings are meant only if you are unable to install Fring on your Handset and no other guide has been posted here.

Nokia E65 Guide

What Follows is a more complete guide than was previously posted. These settings should be compatible with all S60 Symbian phones.

Step 1) Setup your WiFi Access point

i.Navigate to Menu -> Tools -> Settings -> Connection -> Access Point

ii.Create a new access point with your home WiFi settings. Below is just an example:

Connection name: Home Wifi

Data bearer: Wireless LAN

WLAN netw. Name: “your home wifi ap”

Network status: public

WLAN netw. Mode: Infrastructure

WLAN security mode: WPA/WPA2

WLAN security sett.

WPA/WPA2: Pre-shared key

Pre-shared key: “your pre-shared key”

WPA2 only mode: off

Homepage: <leave blank>

Step 2) Setup your Cellular network Access point

Note 1: By default, this step should not be required, as Series 60 Nokia handsets will automatically apply the appropriate network settings depending on the SIM card that is inserted. But if for some reasons, the settings are not applied, just follow the below setup guide.

Note 2: Ensure that your account is enabled for Full Internet access, not just WAP. Prepaid users would most probably out of luck (except for Telstra Next G) as most Australian telco do not allow full Internet access on prepaid

i.Navigate to Menu -> Tools -> Settings -> Connection -> Access Point

ii.Create a new access point with your Mobile provider’s setting. Below is an example:

Connection name: “Name it after your Cellular provider” (e.g. Vodafone internet)

Date bearer: Packet data

Access point name (without the quotes):

“vfinternet.au” (for Vodafone)

“internet” (for all Optus customers), alternative APN’s are as below

“connect” (for Optus customers using Optus Wireless Connect

“busintprv” (for Optus customers using Optus Business Internet)

“telstra.internet” (for Telstra)

“3netaccess” (for Hutch “3”)

Username: <blank>

Prompt password: No

Password: <blank>

Authentication: <Normal>

Homepage: <none>

iii.Leave all the advanced settings at default

Step 3) Setting up SIP settings via WiFi

i.Menu -> Tools -> Settings -> Connection -> SIP settings

ii.Enter the below settings

Profile Name: Exetel WiFi

Service profile: IETF

Default access point: your wifi ap (as in Step 1)

Public username: 09xxxxxx@sip1.exetel.com.au (09xxxxxx = your voip account)

Use compression: No

Registration: When needed

Use security: No

Proxy Server

Proxy server address: sip1.exetel.com.au

Realm: sip1.exetel.com.au

Username: 09xxxxxx (your voip account)

Password: your password

Allow loose routing: Yes

Transport type: UDP

Port: 5060

Registrar server

Registrar serv. addr: sip1.exetel.com.au

Realm: sip1.exetel.com.au

Username: 09xxxxxx (your voip account)

Password: your password

Transport type: UDP

Port: 5060

Step 4) Setting up SIP settings via Cellular network

i.Menu -> Tools -> Settings -> Connection -> SIP settings

ii.Select Options -> Add New -> Use an existing profile

iii.Select the profile created in Step 3

iv.Change the “Profile Name” to Exetel 3G (or something else)

v.Change the Default access point to the one created in Step 2

vi.Leave all other settings as it is and Press Back.

By now, you should have 2 SIP settings, one via the WiFi and the other one via the Mobile network. Press Options -> Default profile, and set your WiFi SIP account as the default account. This way, the handset will always search for your WiFi AP first when making a VOIP call.

Note: if your handset comes pre-configured with your telco’s network settings. Make sure you select the Internet (not WAP) settings in step v. For example, you should select “Optus Internet” and not “Optus Zoo” if you are an Optus customer. Similarly, if you are a Vodafone customer, ensure that you select “Vodafone internet” and not “Vodafone WAP” or “Vodafone Live”.

Step 5) Setting up SIP profile

i.Menu -> Tools -> Settings -> Connection -> Internet tel. Settings

ii.Create a new Profile as below

Name: Exetel SIP Profile: Select both the Exetel Wifi (as in step 3) and Exetel 3G (as in step 4) profile and press OK

Your handset is now configured to make VOIP calls via your WiFi network by default as well as your telco’s data network if the former is not available.

To make a VOIP call,

1)Dial the number (please include area code, for intl calls, use 0011 instead of the “+” sign)

2)Press Options -> Call -> Internet Call

3)The handset will prompt to register to the “Internet Telephone Service”, just select “Yes”

Note: Remember to disconnect from your Cellular or WifI AP after the call in order to save batt life and possibly cost. (I mentioned cost as some telco e.g. Vodafone charges data based on time, i.e. AUD $1 for 5 min. instead of data based)
